A
Stand Alone System is a solar system that operates
completely independent from any mains power grid. The biggest advantage
of such a system is the huge saving you will have on the cost of power
grid connections or generator fuel costs. Furthermore you will never
suffer problems like black-outs, brown-outs or power surges, which can
occur in some areas.
Where
a Grid Interactive System feeds power to the mains grid, a Stand Alone
System feeds power into a bank of storage batteries, therefore making
you fully self sufficient. With the use of an Inverter, the electricity
from the storage batteries is converted to 240 Volts, enabling you to
live exactly as you would from mains power.
Depending
on the size of a solar system, the battery storage can maintain
your household's power requirements for several days without sunshine.
However, many people prefer to invest in a diesel generator or wind
generator to act as a backup. This is called a Hybrid System,
a system that incorporates more than one source of power generator (e.g.
solar modules, diesel generator and wind generator or even hydro power).
